OMA AMO < AUB

OMA AMO < AUB

Uploaded on May 31, 2010

The Areen Architecture Series at the Department of Architecture and Design held a lecture entitled: "On OMA's Work" by Rem Koolhaas.
Rem Koolhaas is an internationally acclaimed architect and urbanist. He founded the Office for Metropolitan Architecture in 1975 together with Elia and Zoe Zenghelis and Madelon Vriesendorp. Koolhaas graduated from the Architectural Association in London and in 1978 published Delirious New York, a Retroactive Manifesto for Manhattan. In 1995, his book S,M,L,XL summarized the work of OMA and established connections between contemporary society and architecture. At this moment Rem Koolhaas is heading the work of OMA as well as AMO¬the conceptual branch of OMA, a think tank focused on social, economic, and technological issues. Rem Koolhaas is a professor at Harvard University where he conducts the Project on the City, a research program investigating changing urban conditions around the world. The projects include an analysis of the role of retail and consumption in contemporary society (The Harvard Guide to Shopping, 2001), a study on China's Pearl River Delta (published as Great Leap Forward, 2002), and studies on Rome, Lagos, Moscow, and Beijing. OMA has completed the Netherlands Embassy in Berlin (2003), a campus center at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago (2003), the Prada Epicenter in Los Angeles (2004) and the Public Library in Seattle (2004). The Seattle Library was chosen by TIME Magazine as The Best Architecture for 2004 and was described by the New York Times as: "t a dark hour: Seattle's new Central Library is a blazing chandelier to swing your dreams upon. If an American city can erect a civic project as brave as this one, the sun hasn't set on the West" (May 16th 2004). In April 2005 the Casa da Musica concert hall in Porto was completed and was already voted as one of the most important concert halls in the world by the New York Times (April 10th 2005). Recent AMO projects include a study for the European Commission on the visual identity of the EU, image restructuring for Condé Nast magazines Lucky and Wired, a study on the future of the automobile for Volkswagen, and a study concerning preservation for the city of Beijing. By combining AMO and OMA Rem Koolhaas is seen as one of the most important thinkers of the last decades. The work of OMA and Rem Koolhaas has been celebrated as well by several international awards, including the Pritzker Architecture Prize (2000) and the RIBA Gold Medal (2004). In 2005 Rem Koolhaas received the Mies van der Rohe Award for the Netherlands Embassy, Berlin. This award is presented every two years by the European Union and the Fundació Mies van der Rohe (Barcelona) to acknowledge and reward quality architectural production in Europe.

Social Entrepreneurship > Females

SHE Entrepreneur

one day to go >

Are you a woman with a vision? Do you want to contribute to sustainable change? Apply to She Entrepreneurs, a new program by the Swedish Institute, and become part of a unique network of women social entrepreneurs. She Entrepreneurs aims to offer inspiration and knowledge as well as build partnerships between Sweden and the countries involved in new innovative social entrepreneurship ventures.

We are looking for visionary women who have the skills to create, organize and run innovative social projects, aiming at improving the state of society.

With She Entrepreneurs the SI aims to lay a foundation for dialogue, mutual understanding and knowledge sharing among young women social entrepreneurs from the Middle East, North Africa and Sweden.

What is She Entrepreneurs?

She Entrepreneurs is a new program by the Swedish Institute which addresses young women social entrepreneurs in selected countries in the Middle East and North Africa: Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Morocco, West Bank-Gaza, Yemen and Iran. The Swedish Institute aims to give the participants innovative tools for sustainable change while seeking to create a network of women change makers in the region. Focused on driven young women, She Entrepreneurs will offer inspiration and knowledge as well as build networks between Sweden and the countries involved.
During five days in Stockholm, the participants will present their project plans for My Idea. This will be a social project brought by each participant to the program, which will then be developed during the course of the program. Equipped with new social media tools, the participants will present the next step in their different projects at the end of the Stockholm week. The goal is to implement the project locally after the program.

During the program, the participants will be matched with Swedish women. These mentors work actively as social entrepreneurs or entrepreneurs. The mentorship will provide inspiration for the continuous work with each participant’s My Idea project for one year. She Entrepreneurs will also enable the creation of new, strong networks. A mentorship start-up meeting will take place during the Stockholm week. The following mentorship meetings will be held using digital and social media platforms, such as Skype and Ning.
The participants will meet Swedish organizations and inspirational people working as social entrepreneurs or entrepreneurs. The whole participant group will be involved in intense and inspirational work, as well as knowledge sharing within the group and with external parties.

What is a social entrepreneur?

"A social entrepreneur is a person who identifies a social problem/need and uses innovative and entrepreneurial skills and principles to create, organize, and run activities with the purpose of being part of the solution to the social problem/need. While traditional entrepreneurs only measure the results in terms of economic profit for the company itself, social entrepreneurs also put strong focus on measuring their results in relation to the effects on society as a whole"

How does it work?

She Entrepreneurs is designed to provide the tools needed to start or develop a social project for sustainable change in the participant's country or region during and after the program. The participant will become part of an exclusive network that will boost creativity and support her personal and professional development.

And then what?

After six months the group will meet for a two-day follow-up. A status report for each social project will be presented.

Accommodation, food and travel

All costs related to accommodation, food and transport during She Entrepreneurs are covered by the Swedish Institute. The Swedish Institute will also arrange and pay for your air travel to and from Sweden, but participants are themselves responsible for costs related to transport within their own countries.
During the program in Stockholm, the Swedish Institute covers your food expenses as well as the costs of all arranged activities.

Insurance

During the program in Sweden all participants will be insured against acute illness and accident through the Swedish State Group Insurance and personal insurance by the Swedish Legal, Financial and Administrative Service Agency (Kammarkollegiet)

Visa

Selected participants are responsible for obtaining their visas in good time before departure to Sweden and other relevant countries.
The program will be held in English and proficient command of English, written and spoken, is therefore a requirement.

Global Creative Contest

Global Creative Contest

The Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS (GYCA), a program of TakingItGlobal, is organizing a creative contest for young people (15 to 29 years old) all over the world. The contest is focused on youth perspectives of HIV and AIDS and how this is communicated through creative expression. August 2010 – August 2011 was designated by the UN General Assembly as the International Year of Youth, a time when issues related to young people will be highlighted and prioritized, particularly in the context of the Millennium Development Goals. This key event provides an opportunity to explore themes with youth and capitalize on this focus on young people to bring creative youth voices to the forefront.

GYCA wants to take advantage of this opportunity to highlight issues related to sexual and reproductive health and rights and how they relate to adolescents and young people.

Contest participants can choose to express:  Why comprehensive sexuality education is important for HIV prevention (CSE) How stigma and discrimination affects young people living with HIV (S&D) What sexual and reproductive health and rights mean to you (SRHR)

The creative works will be featured on the GYCA website, and may be used in campaigns and documents during the International Year of Youth and beyond, always giving credit to the artists. Winners will be announced on March 1 and a special GYCA newsletter will be distributed showcasing the top-rated submissions.
Ruels:
The contest welcomes a variety of mediums. Contributors are encouraged to send digital versions of video, photographs, paintings, sculptures, multi-media works, and more. The various creative works must be connected to one of the topics, specifying which one is it. • Each participant can submit up to 3 pieces of work. One for each main theme. By submitting to the contest participants allow GYCA and their partners to use the work submitted for non-profit promotional activities. GYCA and it's agents will ensure that images/art/videos etc. will not be used for any profitable activity. The creative work submitted should be no older than 1 year old and the author must certify that he/she is the creator of the work he/she is submitting through a form that states they are not plagiarizing.  The selection of finalists will be done by a review panel of HIV activists and organizations who have partner with GYCA in the past.  The review panel will select the top 5 submissions on each of the 3 category. These finalists will be posted online for voting by the community to determine the winner on each category.  There will be a special page on GYCA’s website showcasing the pictures and art where people will be able to vote for their favorite submission.
Prizes:
The submissions with the most votes in each category will win a basket of prizes, potentially including a digital camera, cash or other digital-art related items. The 2nd and 3rd place in each category will also win a prize.
As will be indicated on the release forms artists agree when submitting their creative works, GYCA will share images with partner organizations to be used in future campaigns, documents, websites, etc.
By submitting to the contest, participants grant GYCA and it's partners non-exclusive, royalty-free license to copy, digitize, store, distribute, publish, display, stream, advertise, promote or otherwise use your artwork and their descriptions, in any media or format (including the Internet).
GYCA and it's partners reserve the rights, at their option, to publish any winner’s name, city of residence, photograph, statement regarding the contest, as well as publish or use any artwork submitted, for any purposes, without compensation. Personal information will be collected solely for the purposes of this contest and will not serve for any other purpose. By providing this information, the participants consent to its use for the purposes indicated.
GYCA and its partners assume no responsibility for entries that are incomplete, damaged, misdirected or delayed. By entering, participants agree to abide by the contest rules and the decisions of contest organizers, which are final.
